Getting Started

How do I create an account?

You can create an account in several ways:

  • Sign up with your email address and create a password
  • Sign in with your Google account
  • Sign in with your Apple ID (iOS devices)

How do I create a group?

From your dashboard:

  1. Click "Create Group" button
  2. Enter a group name and optional description
  3. Add group members by email
  4. Start adding expenses!

How do I invite friends to a group?

You can invite friends when creating a group or add them later:

  1. Open your group
  2. Click "Add Member" or "Invite"
  3. Enter their email address
  4. They'll receive an invitation email to join

Managing Expenses

How do I add an expense?

  1. Open the group where you want to add the expense
  2. Click "Add Expense"
  3. Enter the expense details (title, amount, description)
  4. Select who paid for the expense
  5. Choose how to split it among group members
  6. Save the expense

How does expense splitting work?

NeatSplit automatically calculates who owes what based on:

  • Who paid for each expense
  • How the expense was split among group members
  • Any settlements that have been recorded

The balance view shows you exactly who owes money to whom.

How do I mark an expense as settled?

When someone pays you back:

  1. Go to the group's balance view
  2. Find the debt that was paid
  3. Click "Record Settlement"
  4. Enter the settlement details
  5. The balances will update automatically

Account Management

How do I change my username or email?

  1. Go to your Profile page
  2. Click "Change Username" to update your display name
  3. For email changes, contact support

How do I delete my account?

  1. Go to your Profile page
  2. Scroll down to "Account Deletion"
  3. Click "Delete Account"
  4. Follow the confirmation steps

Warning: Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. All your data will be permanently removed.

Privacy & Security

Is my financial information safe?

Yes! Important security measures we take:

  • We only track expense amounts - no bank account or payment information
  • All data is encrypted in transit and at rest
  • We never store credit card or payment method details
  • You control who can see your expenses (only group members)

What data do you collect?

We only collect what's necessary for the app to work:

  • Your name and email address
  • Expense details you add to groups
  • Group memberships and invitations

Payments & Settlements

Important: NeatSplit Does Not Process Payments

NeatSplit is a tracking tool only. We help you:

  • Keep track of who paid for what
  • Calculate who owes money to whom
  • Record when debts are settled

All actual money transfers must be handled between you and your friends directly (cash, Venmo, PayPal, bank transfer, etc.).

How do I pay someone back?

NeatSplit shows you who to pay, but you handle the actual payment:

  1. Check your group's balance to see what you owe
  2. Pay your friend directly (cash, Venmo, etc.)
  3. Record the settlement in NeatSplit to update the balances

Troubleshooting

I can't sign in to my account

  • Make sure you're using the correct email address
  • Try the "Forgot Password" option if using email/password
  • If you signed up with Google/Apple, use that sign-in method
  • Clear your browser cache and try again

I didn't receive an invitation email

  • Check your spam/junk folder
  • Make sure the email address is correct
  • Ask the group creator to resend the invitation
  • Contact support if the problem persists

The app isn't working properly

  • Try refreshing the page (web) or closing and reopening the app (mobile)
  • Check your internet connection
  • Make sure you're using the latest version of the app
  • Contact support with details about the issue
